We were lucky enough to see The Hunger Games tonight at the world premiere in Los Angeles. After a bit of a delayed start following the red carpet, the movie was introduced by Lionsgate’s Joe Drake, Gary Ross, Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. We just left the theater and wanted to share with you our initial (spoiler free) reaction to the movie!
Overall, Gary Ross and team did a phenomenal job. It stuck very close to the book – as promised by many – with only minor changes (ex. no emphasis on the Avoxes). Though for a die-hard fan, the changes and omissions were admittedly slightly distracting on a first viewing, but they didn’t affect the overarching story. The new scenes they created with President Snow, Seneca Crane, the Gamemakers and Haymitch were great additions, and the way they told the back story without Katniss as narrator worked really well. As for the Games themselves, it was non-stop action once they started. The arena looked exactly as we imagined and the violence was shown very tastefully, especially at the Cornucopia scene.
And the actors – we couldn’t be more in awe of their performances. Josh proved his transition beyond a young adult actor – the emotion he conveyed as Peeta was amazing. Liam showed us beyond a shadow of a doubt why he was cast as Gale. Stanley Tucci stole his scenes as the hilarious Caesar Flickerman. Amandla Stenberg’s acting, specifically her relationship with Katniss, was simply perfect. And Jennifer is unquestionably Katniss Everdeen.
We’re still a little overwhelmed by everything we saw and trying to process it! But we most definitely think that y’all will be pleased when the movie hits theaters on March 23rd.
Big thanks to Lionsgate for inviting us to see the movie and for bringing a true fans’ vision of the book to life!
Update: We’re answering questions and giving away some details in the comments. Though we’re noting when we include minor spoilers, please be careful if you don’t want to see anything spoilery!
